Recording sound samples

Today I borrowed a sound recorder from Brian. In the tutorial I had with Jamie, I have planned to focus on experimenting with sound this week.

My aim for my final piece is to use a mix and variety of sounds to create one whole sound piece that has a similar feeling and direction and repeats on a loop. Today I will select some songs that I can experiment with at the end of the week. I might also record some sound if anything interests me.

I have gathered sound samples from interviews online, music, random noises and noises I have made. I will experiment with audio software tomorrow and make samples.

Tutorial- Jamie

Key notes/plans:
  • Think about other materials I can make my installation out of, i.e. wooden panels, strong found materials.
  • Record sound (using a sound recorder) of found material made up of voices, random sounds and clips from music.

Pipilotti Rist

                         'Eyeball Massage' Exhibition 2011

'..single channel videos, sculptures, photographs, wallpapers and video installations spanning her career from the 1980s to today. Highly accomplished technically and employing dazzling colour, Rist's practice fuses sensual images, music and text to create mesmerising installations.'

'Wohnzimmerdisco ohne Angst (Living Without Fear Disco)'   2009  Installation for a living room; light projection, carpet, curtain
Lightboxes, intricate 'video-objects' and still images printed on a variety of materials in the room fabricate a multi-layered interior: a living space which opens itself up to reveal other vistas. Within this she creates an arena in which the viewer is invited to dance. Music and light effects cohabit with domestic furnishings to form a 'living room disco' — a concept that the artist would like visitors to apply to their own homes. Her art conjures positive energies that bring about social change, dissolving the boundaries between public and private space.

'Hip Light's'  2011
"From a distance," Rist tells me by phone from her studio in her native Switzerland, "they will look like whipped cream. Or sheep's heads, with the legs of the pants forming the eyes. I hope they will make people smile, but also think about the relationship we have with this important, sexually charged area in the middle of our bodies. We all come out from between our mother's legs. From there that we first see the light of the world."
This preoccupation with the body – and the female body in particular – underpins much of her art, which encompasses sculpture, audio and video installations. In her 1996 film 'I'm Not the Girl Who Misses Much', Rist dances frenetically for the camera, her breasts bare.

'I'm Not The Girl That Misses Much'  1986

I find there is an unsettling contrast between the girl in the video and the grey background behind her. I feel it contradicts the craziness in her dancing and high pitched singing that slowly gets faster and faster as the video plays. These movements portray a crazed and dramatic person, one of which whom I can relate to at certain parts of my life, which is further emphasized by her black dress that allows her breasts to hang out freely and bounce around as she dances mechanically. The video almost becomes disturbing and creepy after becoming more and more repetitive and also because it becomes more and more edited on an aesthetic and sound level.

When watching this film, I get the feeling that femininity is forced upon me and is hard to ignore. I feel the meaning becomes blurred which then creates more possible meanings and lets the viewer make their own decision. These are aspects that I may use in my own work when creating a sound or video piece.

Jin Me Yoon

'As It Is Becoming: Ear to Ground'  2008  Single channel hd video

A television screen is an original way to present a film. Jin Me Yoon presents her films in a different and contemporary way.  The fact that the film is projected close to the ground and on the ground makes the piece more interesting and brings a new aspect to the work. I am always looking for different ideas to present my film and which height to place it at.

Next Stage

  • Experiment with sound
  • Experiment with scratch-film
  • Experiment with sketch-book work
  • Experiment with taking photographs of graffiti and use photo's already taken in Berlin
  • Find a cage for the installation
  • Produce drawings using my-self as the subject and from life drawing classes

Installation Plan and Ideas (Rough)

Cage
I talked to Jo about the cage for my installation and we talked about what I needed, where I could get a cage and what size I wanted my cage to be. She suggested I talk to Bill about my plans.

Bill recommended I go to supermarkets and ask for a cage (that they use to transport food and products to stock the shelves) that I could borrow or keep. He is also going to keep my idea in mind if anything comes up.

Sound
As I have previously mentioned, I have very little knowledge of making sound or using it. I feel in using sound, it will give me the challenge that I desire. I will have to ask Jamie to help me with the technical aspects and also ask for advice on how to record and talk about ideas of what my sound entails.

Scratch-film
I feel more confident in using scratch-film, as I have previous knowledge and experience in this technique, but yet I still feel I need to practice with the film and writing on the film. I will also need Jamie or Brian's help editing the film.

Rough plan of my installation:

Mona Hatoum

'Light Sentence'  1992
When Israel invaded Lebanon in 1982, Mona Hatoum responded to the conflict with a performance piece entitled The negotiating table. As in many early works, Hatoum used her body to explore universal notions of violence, oppression, confinement and displacement. She lay curled on a table for several hours, blindfolded and enclosed in a body bag covered with entrails, blood and bandages. The table, illuminated by a single bulb, was flanked by 2 empty chairs; the silence of the interrogation room jarringly punctuated by news reports of the war and leaders in peace negotiations.

'Kapan'  2012  Five steel rebar cages with red glass

'Cage-a-deux' 2002

Mona Hatoum is another artist that uses cages as an installation. I especially like 'Light Sentence' and it has given me the idea to use light, e.g in the form of light bulbs. I can experiment with the light and dark that comes through in the cage that suggests the good and bad in a relationship.

Berlin

I went to Berlin looking for some graffiti to take photographs of to use in my work, but I had no idea there was so much of it! I took some pictures of some work I thought I may use. I'm not sure how I want to use some of these images, but will probably either enlarge them or use parts of an image and use it in my sketchbook. I may also use some images from the Berlin Wall.
